Quotes?! Who doesn't love quotes? Here are some of my favorite quotes that I think can get any live streamer motivated and inspired to continue to create.

“The secret to getting ahead is getting started.” – Mark Twain

This is the real secret to Twitch success. So many people now dream of doing it yet most of them never take a single action to get moving on it! I think one problem is the fear of failure. People think that if they start and it's not that good that people will laugh at them or criticize them and who wants that?! But that is exactly what is necessary.

Go back and watch Oprah's first shows, they were hilariously bad. Go back and watch the first episodes of Pewdiepie, also terribad. The key is not to look at it in terms of quality but in terms of moving forward towards your goal of learning and refining your stream so it gets to the point where you are happy with it. Being bad, is part of growing. It's something you need to accept and actually learn to love because you see the bigger picture.

“If you can dream it, you can do it.” – Walt Disney

Many people don't realize the power they truly possess. We have had such a lifetime of others telling us what we can't do. And over time it beats us down and makes us forget that our dreams are possible. So many other people refuse to chase their dreams so they hate it when others try to do it. To breakthrough you have to reject the fears that others project on to you and simply go for it and never stop until you succeed. There is no other way about it in this business.

“It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.” – Confucius

This one is so important if you want to build a Twitch stream. Everyone will tell you that it is a marathon, not a sprint. Night after night you have to get on stream, attract new viewers, retain them, and then come back the next night and do it all over again. To find that kind of endurance you need to believe in yourself 100%. You have to believe no matter what, that if you keep going it will pay off. Combine that with a solid strategy and plan for growth and success becomes a sure thing. It may not come over night, but you can be sure it's coming.

“You are never to old to set another goal or to dream a new dream,” – CS Lewis

I love to see older streamers. People like me born in the early 80's and beyond who are still passionate about gaming. As we get older, it is difficult to withstand the jabs from others that we are still playing games. You see as people get older they really start hating themselves because inside they are afraid to be who they truly are. So every time they see someone enjoying themselves, or acting youthful, or following their passion, they get annoyed and feel compelled to say something to bring the other person down. Ignore these people at all costs.

“The will to persevere is often the difference between failure and success.” – David Sarnoff

With over 1.5 million Twitch streamers we need to go deeper to understand the difference between that group, and the group of 10000+ partnered streamers. There has to be a difference between these two groups. Undoubtedly the partners have had good fortune, been at the right place at the right time, and maybe have some skills that the other's don't. But one thing they certainly have is perseverance. You don't get partnered over night or on day one. It always takes time. Perhaps a professional gamer made it quicker than others, but even then they had the perseverance to first become an expert in their craft (game). Make sure you understand the importance of perseverance.

“What people say is a reflection of them not you.” – Timber Hawkeye

This one is critical to keeping a thick skin while you stream. A lot of people will have shit to say about you. Ignore it. But even better, realize that what they are saying is always about them. Let me explain this one because understanding this can change your life.

When people say something bad about someone else, it is because inside their mind, they either are exactly the same thing they are criticizing, or they once were the same thing. How can a person dislike something if they've never had a first hand experience about it? If I say this streamer is too arrogant, it can only be because at one time or another I either was arrogant and I hated myself for it, or I learned to no longer be arrogant, and thus now, I want to point out everyone who is arrogant so I can feel superior that I am no longer arrogant.

If you think about it, its really hard to criticize something that you have no experience with in your life. So when people make a point to tell you something negative they see about you, you must realize that the only reason that thing is coming up in their consciousness is because they have already dealt, or been dealing with it in their own lives.

Let me give you one more example. Let's say you are dirt poor, never had a cent in your bank account. Would you ever tell someone they are bad with money? Or that they are cheap? No, because you wouldn't have a clue what it's like to be someone with money and face issues of overspending or being a cheap-skate. And even the idea of being a “cheap-skate” can only come from passed down ideas from people around you like your parents. What is a cheap-skate to one person and a smart saver to another. It's really silly how we project our own issues on to other people without ever realizing it. In fact, the best way to learn about yourself, is to carefully watch what you say about others in a negative light. You may have some deeper issues you should explore.

Because the bottom line it, if you've dealt with all your issues that have built up over time, and you have fully accepted yourself, good and bad, then and only then, can you start fully acccepting others in their good and bad. At that time you will never have bad things to say about people because you will realize that everything, good and bad, is necessary. There is no good and bad. You can't have compassion without anger. You can't have love without hate or indifference. They BOTH need to exist.

“What you think of yourself is much more important than what people think of you.” – Unknown

Playing off the last quote, you need to accept and love yourself totally. This is the only way to gain true confidence. Allow yourself to be exactly as you are. Don't try to be another streamer, don't try to be a copy cat. You were created in this world to be you, not anyone else. Don't let what others think about you change you. That is foolish. You look really hard at who you are and you realize that is your greatest strength. Don't ever change for others. Be yourself and love yourself and watch how much confidence you get.

“Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.” – Maya Angelou

Twitch is all about this. Thank you Maya! First you like yourself enough to gain the confidence that you are right to become a live stream entertainer. Then you ask do I love doing this day in and day out. And that is an important question. I think it's really important that you realize that you won't always be playing the same game during your streaming career, so you really need to ask if you love general streaming and entertaining. Thirdly, you need to run your stream exactly how you want and like to do it. Any other way will become a drain on your energy.

If you can get those three things down, you life will flow so well, you will then understand the meaning of success.

“The Only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it, keep looking. Don't Settle.” – Steve Jobs

This quote speaks to streamers and non-streamers. I know in my life I struggled to find what I liked to do, but when I found it there was a certain peace that came over me. It felt so good to wake up and continue on from the last day. Monday's were awesome again! I think a lot of us are afraid to take the chance, but you have to ask yourself, what do you really have to lose? We always make our fears way worse than they truly are.

“Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm.” – Winston Churchill

This is so critical for Twitch streamers. You have to take chances and some of those chances will fail. Don't ever let failure be an enemy, in fact learn to love it, and learn to do it faster. Failing faster is a sure fire way to success. Failure should actually be reworded as feedback. Oh, something didn't work, good to know, time to move forward now.

Some people are so used to wallowing in their failure that they become identified with it. They actually starting thinking of themselves as a failure in life! Even though it was just one thing. Here is a bonus quote:

Don't worry about failure. You only have to be right once. – Drew Houston, Dropbox Founder

“He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life.” – Muhammad Ali

Finally we come to one of the greatest champions of all time. He gets it. You have to take risks as that is where all the rewards lie. You will not get remembered in the middle. You cannot get ahead doing what everyone else is doing. You must take a risk, to be bold, to be different, to be yourself, and you must have the courage to keep going amidst all the questions and fears, and then and only then will you reap the rewards of greatness.

Hi Richie. Thank you very much for amazing articles – I’ve shared this one on Twitter (my Twitter handle is @GamerYooper). I really like the CS Lewis quote and feel it and your personal comment about it applied to me when it comes to games: “You are never to old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.”

I’ve had some huge life changes (marriage, first child, and a move about 1500 miles away) and have barely touched video games the last four years. I felt like I’d never game again. Now at 34 years old, I’m beginning to very slowly put together a Twitch channel (haven’t streamed yet). I’m so organized with everything, that my wife is 100 percent supportive of my plan to stream 5-6 nights a week for 3-4 hours per night.

Thank you again for everything you do, and I hope you’ll check out one of my streams in the near future.
